21st Century Community Learning Program

The 21st Century Community Learning Program (CCLC) is a U.S. Department of Education program, administered through the states, providing grants to schools, community and faith-based organizations and youth development agencies.
The program goal is to provide high quality, expanded learning opportunities outside of regular school hours for students in a safe and sound educational environment.
The 21st Century Program is a key component of President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act. It is an opportunity for students and their families to learn new skills and discover new abilities before the school day has started and after it has ended.
The focus of this program is to provide academic and enrichment activities for children attending schools. Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as math and reading.
In addition, 21st Century Programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling, and character education to enhance the academic component of the program.

Adult Education Component

The 21st Century Program has a number of parent and training components. For example, in partnership with Prosser School District and Columbia Basin Community College, the 21st Century Program is providing child care and tuition scholarships for adults within the geographical area of the Prosser School District who are taking ESL, ABE and GED classes.
Another example is evening school events including History Night, Math Night and Science Night where parents are encouraged to join their children on the school campus to see programs, activities, and program outcomes as well as interact with school staff in a positive, engaging setting. Activities are designed to equip parents to become more knowledgeable and comfortable as their child’s primary teacher through the development of literacy skills, content knowledge and skill-building activities.
